Finding Light Within the Storm

In these turbulent days, many of us in the Middle East are living with a background noise of tension, uncertainty, and grief.

Life in our city feels heavy. The world around us has changed, and with it, our sense of safety and stability. Many of us wake up holding our breath wondering what will happen next, trying to reassure loved ones while managing our own waves of fear and uncertainty.

Once, a friend asked me, “Are we going to die?” My reaction was “We cannot predict everything but right now, we are safe, correct?”

In such times, the invitation is not to deny emotions, but to honour them. Fear, sadness, and confusion are natural responses to instability. They remind us that we care deeply about our lives, families, and future. When we acknowledge what we feel, we stop fighting ourselves and begin to reconnect to our inner selves.

This is where our inner light becomes essential. The light I speak of is not about us pretending everything is fine; but it’s about remembering that peace and courage already live inside us.

Even amidst chaos we can return to the quiet space within those whispers, “You are safe”.

Simple practices to ground yourself

You do not need big, dramatic actions to begin to feel more resourced. Small, consistent practices can gently regulate your nervous system and remind you that you are not powerless.

·       Breathe. Before reacting to any news or message, place a hand on your heart, take a slow breath, and exhale longer than you inhale. This helps your body come out of “panic” mode and creates a tiny island of safety within you.

·       Ground into what is real. Look around you and name three things you can see, three things you can touch, and three sounds you can hear. The warmth of your coffee, the presence of a loved one, the light coming through the window — these small realities can become anchors.

·       Reach out and connect. Send a caring message, call a friend, or sit in silence with someone who feels safe. Every moment of genuine connection expands the zone of calm around you and reminds you that you are not alone.

Resilience isn’t the absence of pain; it’s about remembering that your inner light is still there, even when the world outside feels dark.

Perhaps this moment is asking us to become quiet lights that keep glowing while the storm passes. Your presence, your kindness, your breath — they matter more than you realize.

May this time, though challenging, become a space where we remember our shared humanity and rediscover the strength of our essence.
